Adbusters
Challenging the lies

Do you remember "BUGA UP"?

Back in the 70's courageous and creative people "retouched" billboards advertising cigarettes.

The intention was to challenge the systematic, entrenched lies of the tobacco industry with the reality - that cigarettes were an addictive, cancer producing and life killing product.

We can say this now ( perhaps) but while the addictive and cancer producing qualities of cigarettes were known for decades the capacity to say this in public was crushed.

The tobacco industry simply bought, bullied and lied its way to the top of economic respectability.

It took decades of debate, reports, inquiries and political arm twisting to slow the capacity of the tobacco industry to promote cigarettes.

But the catalyst for the success was probably the clever challenge of BugaUp who made billboard advertising tell the truth about their products.

AdBusters is the spritual child of Buga Up

It is a forum of creative advertising and media people who are determined to expose the lies the mainstream media feeds us.

Their website, magazine and worldwide campaigns tackle the isssues of sustainability at the very core of the problem - challenging the lies that structure our society.
